THE VINEYARD

EXTRA INFO

PROGRAM NOTES

The Vineyard is a childhood memory, from when my grandfather would secretly take me to the countryside. It is inspired by the life cycle of a vineyard: the first buds, the ripening of the fruit, and the plant’s rest before blooming again. The music seeks to reflect the irregularity and organic nature of the vines: the furrows in the soil, the rows of plants, the leaves… diverse forms coexisting in a shared, breathing landscape. A wild nature, yet full of fragility.

В СНЕГАХ

In the snow (2025)
1st Prize Rachmaninoff International Competition
SOPRANO + PIANO
Duration: 5′

EXTRA INFO

Aleksandr Blok (1880-1921)

IN THE SNOW:
And I am drawn
in the starry veil!
deceived by you,
Oh, Eternity!

Beneath me stretches
into the infinite distance
your design, Infinity,
Prison of the world!
narrow lyre,
goddess’s star,
It whispers with snow
to me.

And the ship of the sunset
sinks
into the soft and blue
depth.

Aleksandr Blok (1880-1921)

PROGRAM NOTES

For the third time, the CSMA Philharmonic Orchestra commissioned a composer to write a piece with the same instrumentation as “The Soldier’s Tale” (Violin, Double Bass, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone and Percussion). Some of Stravinsky’s gestures permeate the language of my work, with more than a few direct quotes to “The Soldier’s Tale”. In my case, I try to tell a story about how war erases everything to the point of absurdity.

Nobody remembers any more those two soldiers who remain entrenched, they have lost track of time days ago. They play dice to see who will wield the only gun they have left to try to find out why everything has been quiet for days.
On their way out, they discover a letter among the earth, they haven’t even thought about their families for months. In the distance they hear a loud bang. They don’t know if it is a bombing or if they are celebrating the end of the war. So they decide that the only thing left to do is to dance.
Thanks to the Conducting Class of the Aragon Superior Conservatory and to Borja Quintas for the confidence.

Although the dice are unpredictable,
we were lucky in this roll:
we got doubles and we got Pablo Brazales.

(Conducted by Pablo Brazales Maldonado).

NEON ISSUES

NEON ISSUES (2020)
ALTO SAXOPHONE + ACCORDION
41st International Frédéric Mompou Award
Duration: 12’30’

PROGRAM NOTES

Neon has its own poetry, not only because of its behaviour as a gas, but also because of its light and its use in audiovisuals, that mystical but modern nuance that today has a vintage connotation.
I started writing with sound in mind, but gradually this perspective shifted towards the visual. The sound took on an increasingly rough texture and the early resonances gained strength. The work is divided into parts without a break in between: [ I. Flowing, II. Gas leak, III. Slow ignition, IV. Warning Lights, V. Burning, VI.Sublimation VII. Still burning, VIII. Scorched tube, IX. Distilled ashes. ] Contrast and surprise are fundamental in the management of the materials, giving a sense of uncontrolled, but exhaustive organisation.

This work was the first I composed after studying my bachelor in composition. Having spent various months without writing and with a very intense summer, I decided to take it as a warm-up before starting the new year. Surprisingly, it was the winner of the 41st Frederic Mompou International Competition (2020).

PROGRAM NOTES

“Art, which copies society copying itself, is not simply the mirror of life. Both are made up. Nature is an echo-system”
Allan Kaprow.
We live in a world with blurred limits between natural and artificial, art and life, original and copy.
On this basis, my intention has been to recreate sound reproduction processes, in an “echo system” where they coexist and converge.
Arriving at the interrelation of the sounds of a broken cassette tape, an analog synthesizer, a radio trying to tune and a scratching vinyl.
Finally, contemplating when the copies start to damage the original.
For Electric Guitar, Piano, Bass Clarinet, Accordion and Percussion.
